A secret cemetery, a kidnapped sibling and puzzles most grave…join Historian Errol Locke in his perilous quest to rescue his Sister Clementine!

Having met Sara and Alexandre at Brighton’s Develop games conference and discovered a shared passion for magic, creativity and puzzles, we decided to join forces and look for a suitable game jam that we could enter together.

After settling on the ‘Dying Year’ Visual Novel Jam, we explored our idea for a Gothic mystery puzzler set in a decaying cemetery. As Sara began working on a prototype for our Godot build, I started experimenting with characters, which took a rabbit-themed turn quite early on. I loved developing their personalities and experimenting with the brush pen art style and a limited colour palette. I began researching graves and tombstones and worked on early concept art for the environment and grave puzzles. At the same time, Alexandre referenced our ideas and began to explore the musical theme and sounds.

We had a lot of fun working out the mechanics for our various game puzzles through our weekly video calls (which were balanced around our other freelance commitments). We developed our outline for the story together. I then wrote the narrative, which we used to create our intro and outro cutscenes. I made additional spot illustrations for these. We decided on the name Lost & Bound, and I created our logo and title screen.

Having begun development in October, by December 31st, we had completed work on the first iteration of ‘Lost & Bound’, and what had started as an outlet for a bit of creative playtime had grown into a solid, vertical slice of a game.

We’re super proud of Lost & Bound and the world and atmosphere we created. I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Sara and Alex to make something of our own devising within the theme and timeline of the jam. Since release, the game has received consistent plays on our Itch page and positive reviews, with everyone asking when the full game is coming! We are currently exploring funding options, so watch this space! I’d love to work on more projects like this and let my imagination and storytelling fly.
